Welcome to 1st Lower Earley Scout Group
Introduction
Scouting is one of the great success stories of the last 100 years. From an experimental camp for 20 boys on Brownsea Island in 1907, it has spread to 216 countries and territories, with an estimated 30 million members. Scouting aims to contribute to the education of young people (both boys and girls) and to help build a better world where people are self-fulfilled as individuals and play a constructive role in society. Scouts are given opportunities to take part in activities and learn skills they might not have access to elsewhere. Scouting offers challenge and adventure to 400,000 young people and 100,000 adults across the UK. We
believe in helping our Members fulfil their potential by working in teams, learning by doing and thinking for themselves. We give people of every background the chance to stretch themselves, learn new skills and make life-long friends.
Scouting is structured nationally into Counties, Districts and Groups. We are in Royal Berkshire County, Loddon District, which has 12 Groups, of which 1st Lower Earley is one of them.
Lower Earley
The 1st Lower Earley Scout Group was set up due to a shortage of Scout Groups in the Lower Earley area. The Group currently consists of Beaver Colonies for children between the ages of 6 and 8, Cub Packs for children between the ages of 8 and 10½ and a Scout Troops for children between the ages of 10½ and 14.
Our first Beaver colony opened in 2010, our Cub pack opened in 2012 and in 2013 we started a Scout Troop. Since then we have grown to two Colonies, three Packs and two Troops. We currently have over 160 young people (Beavers, Cubs and Scouts) supported by a team of more than 30 adult volunteers. If you would like to join our Beaver Colony, Cub Pack or Scout Troop, please contact us by clicking the appropriate link or by filling in the Contact Form in the appropriate subsection (accessible from the website menu at the top of this page).
We also have some great opportunities for adults to be part of the Scout group - you can find out about these and contact us by clicking the “Get Involved” link in the main menu at the top of the page.
After the Scout Troop, each child has the option of moving on into an Explorer Unit, which is District based. The age at which a child transfers from Beavers to Cubs and Cubs to Scouts is flexible so as to give each child the choice at which age he/she is ready to move up.
In addition to joining in activities within our 1st Lower Earley group, we will also be invited to other activities organized by other Groups in our District, This gives a multitude of opportunities for the Beavers and Cubs to participate in a variety of activities such as swimming, quiz nights and an air rifle shooting competition.
